Need for a Tooth Extraction
Extraction of teeth or removal of teeth, are last resorts for dentists in dealing with teeth issues. In some instances, extraction of teeth are necessary for proper development of other teeth, proper alignment of other teeth, and prevention of damage to other teeth. Orthodontics or “Braces” sometimes requires teeth extractions to create space for braces to be successful. Although orthodontics is moving in a direction excluding teeth removal, extractions may still be necessary to create proper overall bite.
Extractions of third molars or wisdom teeth are usually indicated if the position of the teeth are not favorable meaning the teeth or not coming in properly. These instances include teeth that are horizontally positioned rather than the normal vertical position of a tooth. The third molar could be positioned in a way that interferes with the adjacent tooth which would require an extraction to prevent damage to the adjacent tooth.
Many children will need extractions for simple aide with eruption of other teeth. Some will need extractions due to infection or large cavities damaging much of the tooth. Other children will need extractions for orthodontic reasons. Extraction of baby teeth, primary teeth, are usually easier than adult teeth.
Another need for an extraction is heavy trauma to a tooth causing a crack in the tooth. This could be done by biting into a hard object or hit by something. Extreme pain would ensue in the event of a cracked tooth and extreme sensitivity.
Most extractions are needed when damage to a tooth is caused from a large infection such as a cavity. A cavity could grow rapidly and if untreated could need treatment beyond a root canal to save the tooth. Pain could subside from medication but will return multiplied if further untreated.
